A Practical Guide to Common Stains and What Actually Removes Them

18 December 2025 · 6 min read

Not all stains are equal. Treating them the same way is how a small mark becomes permanent. Here is how the main categories differ.

Oil-based stains

Grease, cosmetics and food oils resist water. These are where dry cleaning excels, as solvent lifts oil that water leaves behind. Avoid rubbing, which pushes oil deeper.

Tannin stains

Coffee, tea and wine are tannin-based and respond to prompt water-based treatment. Never apply heat before the stain is gone, as heat sets it permanently.

Protein stains

Blood, sweat and dairy need cool treatment. Hot water cooks the protein into the fabric, so always start cold.

When to call a professional

For delicate fabrics, set-in marks or valuable items, professional assessment is the safest choice. Home remedies on the wrong fabric often cause more damage than the stain itself.

First-response rules that save fabric

What you do in the first minutes often decides whether a stain comes out at all. Blot rather than rub, work from the outside of the stain inwards, and — crucially — never apply heat (a dryer or iron) until the mark is gone, as heat sets many stains permanently. When in doubt, leave it untreated and let a professional assess it.

Why some stains still need a professional

Set-in marks, stains on delicate or structured fabrics, and anything on a valuable or irreplaceable item are best left to professional treatment. The right solvents and controlled techniques can lift what home remedies cannot — and, just as importantly, avoid the fabric damage that well-meaning DIY attempts frequently cause.
